Jan Groth exhibition at Rogaland Museum of Fine Arts in 2008

Rogaland Museum of Fine Arts presents an international exhibition celebrating the works of Jan Groth through a journey of his roots and influences in American and European late modernist art. Groth will turn 70 in 2008 and it will be natural for the Capital of Culture year to mark this anniversary in a worthy manner. The exhibition is due to open in November 2008.

The internationally renowned artist Jan Groth was born in Stavanger, and is considered one of his generation's foremost visual artists. He is best known for his monumental tapestries, but has been equally active in drawing and sculpture. Having had his base abroad for years, Groth returned to Norway in 2002, and continues to be considered an artist of international reputation. Since his return, he has been working extensively on developing his principle form; the aesthetic line.

The exhibition will present works by Jan Groth alongside other artists that have inspired him throughout the years, composed mainly of late modernist works from American and European art of the 1950s – 1970s.

The list of works will not be clear until the autumn of 2007. We can divulge, however, that we are working to bring in works by great international names.

This exhibition is a collaborative project between the Rogaland Museum of Fine Arts, the Henie Onstad Art Centre, Drammen Museum and Stavanger2008. The curator for the exhibition will be Åsmund Thorkildsen of Drammen Museum.
