From Eigerøy lighthouse in Eigersund municipality.

On the Edge: Art projects at six lighthouses in Rogaland

Stavanger2008 and the collaboration group ’En kjede av fyr’ (A String of Lighthouses) are launching a contemporary arts project called On the Edge. This involves six international artists preparing projects for six different lighthouses in Rogaland County.   

During 2008 a selection of world-leading artists will be commissioned to produce projects and/or installations for the following six lighthouses in Rogaland County:   
– Eigerøy lighthouse, Eigersund municipality
– Kvassheim lighthouse, Hå municipality
– Obrestad lighthouse, Hå municipality
– Feistein lighthouse, Klepp municipality
– Tungenes lighthouse, Randaberg municipality
– Utsira lighthouse, Utsira municipality

The six artists will be allocated a lighthouse each and will be working there for a period of three to six weeks. The projects will differ in form and content: Some will be temporary, while others may be of a more or less permanent nature.

We have already booked the following artists:  
– Berni Searle (South Africa)
– Michael Petry (England)
– Nordisk Rørelse (Scandinavia)

We are also looking to book a Japanese, American and Norwegian artist. In addition, we have confirmation that the musician Nils Peter Molvær will be writing a commissioned work for On the Edge. This piece will be performed at all the lighthouses, if possible.

On the Edge originates from the project group "A string of lighthouses" which organises the cooperation between all the lighthouses in Rogaland. A programme to upgrade the lighthouses has already been implemented, thanks to generous grants from various governmental authorities.
