About Stavanger2008
Passion is a historical play, linked to mediaeval traditions and local history. Passion was enacted in Stavanger for the first time as part of the millennium celebrations in 2000, and was so favourably received that the executive committee of the city council decided that Stavanger should endeavour to become a "Passion Play City".
After the set four-year interval the Passion plays were last enacted in year 2004, and now we are all set for Passion08, which will take place on 5-13 March 2008, inside, outside and around the Stavanger Cathedral and the Breiavannet lake. Anna S. Songe-Møller is responsible for the artistic direction.
Passion08 is based on the past, with the intention of speaking to and about today's modern people so that it might influence the future, too. The struggle between good and evil has been with us forever, but we can choose the good.
Passion08 is characterised by its diversity, with something to delight everyone, be they young or old, big or small.
There will be seven sub-projects, giving the audience a taste of mediaeval traditions, of the ecclesiastical, secular and popular kinds.
– Mystery Play ”Over alt” in the Stavanger cathedral
– Mediaeval plays in the city park around the Breiavannet lake
– "Etterklang" Reverberations at the cathedral square
– Knight's tournament at Kongsgård (the cathedral school courtyard)
– A parade of jesters and jugglers through the streets
– Figurative theatre for pre-school children
– Primary school projects on the Middle Ages.
Students from the University of Stavanger, the secondary schools, the Steiner school, the culture schools, professional artists from Norway and abroad and lots of other people will help set the stage. The primary schools will work on mediaeval themes in various projects, and will have their own programmes and parades.
